Sodium bentonite serves as the binder addition in a green-sand molding system, with plasticity-enhancing and wet-strength-improving functions. This foundry-grade material is natural montmorillonite clay for iron, steel and non-ferrous casting enquiries. Select the grade and fineness around the base sand and molding process in which the binder will be used.
Use the binder within the sand system
Identify the base sand, cast metal and required molding conditions before defining the bentonite addition requirement. The binder's intended role should be linked to the wet-strength performance needed by that process. A foundry enquiry should establish those conditions so the proposed grade can be evaluated within the actual sand system.
Specify the clay grade and fineness
Keep the composition and particle-size requirement attached to the selected material. The fineness range provides enquiry choices rather than one exact particle size. Agree the required distribution and lot acceptance basis for the binder order.
- Montmorillonite content is at least 75%.
- SiO2 content is 55-65%.
- Al2O3 content is 15-20%.
- Moisture content is no greater than 12%.
- The fineness designation is 100-325 mesh.
- Color ranges from light grey to cream.
Qualify wet strength for the molding duty
Define the test methods and wet-strength requirements relevant to the chosen green-sand process. The addition rate should be established for the buyer's base sand and operating conditions rather than inferred from a general high-strength description. For an iron, steel or non-ferrous casting project, that qualification brief connects the bentonite grade, required fineness and binder function to the foundry's own molding requirement.
