Ceramic foundry sand should be selected as a material grade and a particle-size requirement together. This ball-shaped sand is offered for lost-foam casting enquiries and for steel, iron, aluminum and alloy casting applications. The useful choice is the ceramic grade that fits the intended foundry process, rather than a fineness designation considered on its own.
Choose fineness independently from chemistry
The ceramic-sand enquiry can specify an AFS designation or an appropriate mesh-size requirement, but those descriptions should not be treated as an automatic conversion. Identify the required distribution and the way it will be assessed for the selected grade. Particle-size customization is available, allowing the sand enquiry to start with the intended process requirement.
- AFS choices include 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60.
- AFS200 is an additional ceramic-sand size choice.
- Mesh enquiries include 10-20 mesh and 30-40 mesh.
- Requested particle sizes can be customized.
- Ball-shaped grains define the sand's physical form.
Match the alumina grade to the casting enquiry
The Al2O3 range is 65-85%, with separate grade choices of 70%, 73%, 75% and 78%. Select the required ceramic-sand grade for the order instead of combining those percentages into one recipe. The chemistry requirement should remain linked to the chosen size distribution and the metal-casting process being considered.
Evaluate the sand within the foundry system
Refractoriness is 1770-2000 °C and the pH range is 7-8 for this ceramic material. Evaluate the selected sand with the intended binder and pouring conditions so those properties are considered in their actual process context. For a lost-foam or other foundry application, a defined material-and-size requirement gives the qualification work a more useful starting point than a general high-temperature description.
