Custom ferrous-component enquiries include carbon steel, stainless steel, gray iron and ductile iron. Selected green-sand, sand- or investment-casting routes can be paired with CNC machining for the actual part. Truck, pump and engineering-machinery requests should each identify their own drawing and operating requirements.

Define the alloy’s required treated condition

Quench-and-temper heat treatment is listed and should be matched to the selected grade. State the governing material document and the condition needed for component acceptance. Identify the point in the manufacturing sequence at which material properties and controlled dimensions must be assessed.

Use the drawing to locate CNC work

Show the interfaces attaching, locating or contacting adjacent components. Distinguish cast geometry from dimensions requiring final machining. Identify the required machining allowances where further work follows treatment. Mark datums, limits and measurement conditions, including relationships that must be assessed together to establish the part’s working fit.

  • Inspection references include MT, UT, RT and CMM.
  • Assign methods and examination areas to defined acceptance criteria.
  • Specify the reports and material records needed for approval.
  • Provide quantity and the controlled component revision.

Choose documents and approve the finished component

Applicable specification families are ASTM, AISI, DIN, BS, JIS and AS. Identify the actual document and edition, and request relevant ISO9001:2008 documentation and scope. Explain the purpose of any initial part and retain its accepted material, geometry and delivered-state requirements with the production-order definition.
